On Saturday and Sunday 11th and 12th May, thirty members of the Tiffin Boys’ Choir travelled to the Barbican to rehearse with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus. For many choir members this was not the first time they would perform this popular symphony composed by Mahler. The fifth movement calls for a choir of boys and women to play a starring role, one which the Tiffin Boys’ Choir has fulfilled many times before with orchestras including the Los Angeles and Royal Philharmonic. The rehearsals were to prepare for two concerts featuring this symphony, a work often staged in May due to its pastoral programme depicting the coming of summer. On Sunday 12th and Thursday 16th the musicians took to the stage, directed by world renowned American conductor Michael Tilson-Thomas, to give an impressive performance in front of a full house, sold out thanks to the significance of the work and its conductor. The pupils not only performed brilliantly but also embraced the opportunity to see and hear the UK’s finest orchestral musicians play as they sat only metres away from them. Congratulations to the pupils who represented Tiffin School so admirably in front of the four thousand audience members.
