After a well-earned half-term rest, Tiffin Sport took no time at all to get back into the full swing of things. We have both Football and Rugby Sevens seasons starting this half-term, both with brilliant results to report on already, as well as continuing good work and results within our netball programme.
Our Rugby Sevens season got underway at Middlesex 7’s for our 1st VII and despite the 1st XV having a tremendously successful 15-a-side season, sevens is a completely different game of rugby and does take a bit of adjusting to (unless you’re Antoine Dupont!). The boys were also drawn in a very difficult group, competing against sevens giants like Harrow School and Gordon’s ACE Academy. They ran out 31-19 winners against a tough Grey Court side in their first match, but unfortunately followed that up with three straight defeats against Harrow, Gordon’s and St. Benedict’s – Mr. Blackburn was proud of the team though and lots of learnings can be taken onwards to the Surrey 7s and then Rosslyn Park later in the term where we’re hoping for more success from this very talented group.
Our football season had a delayed start after the wet end of February has led to lots of standing water calling games off, including our first block against Kingston Grammar. However, the sixth form managed to play a game in midweek away at Grey Court School, securing a brilliant 5-1 victory with Mr. Hoadley extremely happy with the result and guile shown, with Nikola being awarded man of the match afterwards as well. More recently, two U16s teams travelled to Ibstock Place to play against their A and B sides; their A team in particular has faced and beaten some stern opposition this season. Tiffin A’s fought hard for a very well deserved 4-1 victory with brilliant play from Yanis and Oscar in particular – the same boys lost to Ibstock 4-1 last season, so a really impressive turnaround in a year! The B’s also did well to earn a 2-2 draw and could’ve even gone on to win the game. The U15s turn to play their first ever school football is just on the horizon with three fixtures against a mix of Glyn and ACS Cobham at the weekend, good luck to all!
The Girls Rugby team also travelled a fair distance to Dagenham in Essex for a match against Robert Clack School. The team consisted mainly of Year 12’s due to Year 13 mocks, a good opportunity to work on next year’s tactics and style they wish to implement, as well as give other girls a chance to play! The girls put on a brilliant effort against a strong Robert Clack side but unfortunately found themselves on the wrong side of a close 22-12 game. Mr. Brown was really happy with the performance despite the result, especially with the Year 12’s that stepped up!
Continuing with girls sport, the netballers had their first fixture of the half-term against Kingston Grammar away (although just over the road). It was a hard fought game that was back and forwards the whole way, with Tiffin eventually edging out a 27-26 victory! Really well done to all involved, their progression recently has been a joy to see.
That finishes our first sports roundup for the half-term – next week we will be reporting on more sevens results from the U14s, U15s and 1st VII in their Surrey 7s competitions, as well as two basketball fixtures and more football matches as our programme well and truly gets underway!
